With a Blue Ray Disc Playerblue ray player you will get a massive improvement in picture quality – much sharper and richer. The discs carry up to 5 times more information than the standard DVD which means BlueRay can offer more features and bonus content as well. Another big advantage is that the discs are resistant to dirt and scratches.

The high definition surround sound with BlueRay will be far superior as well – the audio being much deeper and far more powerful with any surround-sound set-up. And it´s dead simple to get started – all you need is a Blue Ray Disc Playerblue ray disc player, a High Definition TVblue ray player, a HDMI cable and of course a disc.

Blueray players have the ability to play your current standard DVD collection, and you may have come across the term Upscaling in relation to a Blue ray player.

What is Upscaling?

Your old DVD collection was designed to be viewed on a CRT screen, and as such was encoded at the lower quality 576i resolution. Because your High Definition TV was designed to display material in either 720p, 1080i or 1080p resolution it uses sophisticated ’scaling’ technology to take a video source and scale it to fit the screen, or ‘upscale’.

Blueray player manufacturers have taken the upscaling concept a step further by adding detail to an upscaled source to create sharper more detailed images, enhancing the perceived quality of, for example, your existing standard DVDs.

Of course, sophisticated upscaling algorithms are making an educated guess as to what extra detail should be added. Although the extra detail is essentially ‘made up’ the results can be surprisingly good, and can give your old DVDs a new lease of life.

The Sony BDP-S360 BlueRay has had some great press and the quality of the player is amazing. It loads films really quickly for such a cheap player. The picture is as good as any high end player, it decodes and bitstreams all HD sound and upscales DVD well.

A 3D Blue Ray Player on the market in 2010 !

LOS ANGELES– December 17, 2009 – “Throughout this year, movie goers have shown an overwhelming preference for 3D when presented with the option to see a theatrical release in either
3D or 2D,” said Victor Matsuda, global chairman, BDA Promotions Committee. “We believe this demand for 3D content will carry over into the home now that we have, in Blu-ray Disc, a medium
that can deliver a quality Full HD 3D experience to the living room.”

The “Blu-ray 3D” specs will fully leverage the technical advantages of the Blu-ray Disc format to provide unparalleled picture quality as well as uniformity and compatibility across the full range of Blu-ray 3D products, both hardware and software. Notably, the specification allows every Blue ray player 3d player and movie to deliver Full HD 1080p resolution to each eye, therefore maintaining the industry leading image quality to which Blueray Disc viewers are accustomed. The specification will
deliver the 3D image to any compatible 3D display, no matter whether that display uses LCD, Plasma or other technology and regardless of what 3D technology the display uses to produce the image to the viewer’s eyes.

“From a technological perspective, it is simply the best available platform for bringing 3D into the home,” said Benn Carr, chairman, BDA 3D Task Force. “The disc capacity and bit rates Blu-ray
Disc provides enable us to deliver 3D in Full HD 1080p high definition resolution”

The Blue ray player 3D spec is also designed to allow PS3 game consoles to playback Blueray 3D content in 3D. Additionally, the specification supports playback of 2D discs in forthcoming blue ray 3D players and can permit 2D playback of Blu-ray 3D discs on an existing Blue ray player.

“In 2009 we saw Blu-ray firmly establish itself as the most rapidly adopted packaged media format ever introduced,” said Matsuda. “We think the broad and rapid acceptance Blu-ray Disc already enjoys with consumers will be a factor in accelerating the uptake of 3D in the home. In the meantime, existing players and libraries can continue to be fully enjoyed as consumers consider extending into 3D home entertainment.”

The Blu-ray 3D specification calls for encoding 3D video using the Multiview Video Coding (MVC) codec, an extension to the ITU-T H.264 Advanced Video Coding (AVC) codec currently supported by all Blu-ray Disc players. MPEG4-MVC compresses both left and right eye views with a typical 50% overhead compared to equivalent 2D content, and can provide full 1080p resolution backward compatibility with current 2D Blu-ray Disc players. The specification also incorporates enhanced graphic features for 3D. These features provide a new experience for users, enabling navigation using 3D graphic menus and displaying 3D subtitles positioned in 3D video.
