Different Formats Of Blank CD Media

Different Formats Of Blank CD Media

Even with well over a decade in the marketplace, DVDs can still be the source of some confusion for the average buyer of home electronics. Competing formats is not unheard of when it comes to DVDs, as a challenge had emerged within only three years of its debut threatening the very survival of the standard. It would seem, however, that format wars could now be a thing of the past with HD-DVD’s recent abdication to rival Blue-Ray Disc. This fourth article of the series examining many things DVD will now take a look at the vanquished contender format of HD-DVD.

Now in what appears to be an inherent characteristic of the DVD, whereby the very acronym seems to engender competing definitions (viz., “Digital Versatile Disc” versus “Digital Video Disc”), HD-DVD has alternately been defined as “High-Definition DVD” and “High-Density DVD.” Both meanings describe the format accurately, however, as it is precisely the high data density that makes possible the high-definition video. With strong backing from consumer electronics power Toshiba, HD-DVD was envisioned to become the successor to the standard DVD format. Under steady pressure from the competing format of Blue-Ray Disc, however, support for HD-DVD continually dwindled until around two years after its debut it would be discontinued. Following on the heels of a series of high profile defections to Blue-Ray, Toshiba conceded the market and effectively rendered HD-DVD defunct. The HD-DVD Promotion Group that had been organized to advocate for the format was disbanded soon thereafter.

The HD-DVD Promotion Group had been organized as a consortium of electronics manufacturers and movie studios to coordinate efforts worldwide on behalf of the format. Toshiba Corporation served as the chair, with NEC, Sanyo Electric, and Memory-Tech rounding out the leadership in various capacities, with a total of sixty-one general members and seventy-two associate members. Toshiba had previously served as the chairman company for the DVD Forum, which had been comprised of industry insiders with a similar mission of promotion and advocacy for DVDs in general. But advances in laser technology yielded by Sony and Pioneer lead to the development of Blue-Ray, creating a deep schism in the industry between those who backed Blue-Ray and those who championed HD-DVD. Even though today’s Blue-Ray Discs are virtually identical to standard DVDs, at the time of their introduction Blue-Ray Discs had to be housed in a protective caddy that posed various problems, many of which involved increased expenses, such as requiring special players that can accept them.

Customer Review:

I bought the Blu-ray Disc at the same time I bought a Sony Bravia TV 40EX500 everything to synchronize and compatible I wanted. The player is smooth, fast, loud, a little about the functions and synchronizes with the majority, except when you restore a DVD and pause. It is anywhere from a 1-3 seconds delay before the voice catching image. Or, you can bet all the time, or miss some dialogue. It is a regular DVD and Blu Ray is not. Another thing you have is about to go to the menu and give it not the digital / analog and the other to see the problem of synchronization and switching to other types of .. hold serious difficulties, not a good option for HD. I often heard, so it is really painful. Sony does not seem to solve this problem. Note that DVD player not on this issue, the compatibility with older models of Sony, as well as the S5100. I have tried other brands of Blu Ray .. Samsung BDC-6500, and it worked perfectly with Sony Bravia EX 500 TV remote control that comes from Samsung allows you to synchronize your TV .. Problem solved. I hope Sony address as I think most people buy the same brand. In this case, however, that not not come by this problem.

Sony BDP-S570 Blu-ray Disc Player

The Sony BDP-S570 has has performed great so far. The picture & sound quality is excellent. The unit has a lot of features that I haven’t tried yet.
Underperforming

This is a great “Blue-Ray” player. It loads much faster than our first one.

It plays Pandora which is very cool.

You can watch YouTube, that’s cool too.

I have it connected via WIFI on my N router with 16MB internet cable service. The setup was simplistic.

It is streaming NetFlix, but only in 720HD. On a phone call I got them to admit that they are “working on getting 1080.” The Apple TV and Samsung stream 1080. We have to get Blue-Rays through via snailmail.

I have not, however, been able to get it to function with any of my computers (for pictures, music, videos,…). I have three computers; one running XP, another Windows 7 and a new iMac. I can get them to pick up that the Sony device exist, but that’s it. I’ve emailed Sony and got a worthless response. Apparently, I will have block out time to call Sony and see if we can make it happen.

Get this; you can read online, as I have, that people with the Samsung WIFI player are streaming Blue-Rays. My question, “how in the world can that be, and why can’t I via my Sony player, when it was Sony who invented the Blue-Ray?”
Fantastic!

This is an outstanding product!

I had problems with the WiFi features of my Sony BDP-S370, but this product works flawlessly.

Another great buying experience on Amazon!
S570 vs PS3

In this review I’ll do a quick comparison between the S570 and original 60GB PS3. I’ve used the PS3 as my main blu-ray player since it has always been the best in regards to speed and compatibility. But now, there are a lot of players on the market that rival and surpass the PS3. I will start off by saying that my main concern was loading speed (since I’m accustomed to the PS3’s speed) and any extras included with new blu-ray players was a moot point. Since the S570 has consistently gotten top ratings for loading speed I decided to purchase it as my main blu-ray player.

After using the S570 for just over a month I can attest to the speed of this player. Using one of my heavier menu loading blu-ray movies, The Pirates of the Carribean, I did a few real world speed tests. With the PS3, from power on until the player recognized the disc, it took roughly 30 seconds while the S570 only took 11 seconds (with quick-start enabled.) Skipping past all the previews, I could start watching the movie in just under 1 minute with the S570 while the PS3 took nearly 1 minute and 45 seconds. Which brings me to one great thing about the S570; the speed of skipping chapters is almost instantaneous. Generally speaking, with the S570 I can start watching most of my movies in the time the PS3 would power on and load the disc. Overall, the speed performance of the S570 is amazing.

The menu screen is exactly like the PS3’s XMB so there were no surprises there. It’s not as smooth navigating through the menu as it is on the PS3 but it’s tolerable. There are a lot of online features on the XMB (some which are available through firmware updates) but I really don’t use much of it. The only ones I played with were YouTube and Amazon’s Video on Demand. Initial wireless setup was a breeze and I was able to stream YouTube videos with ease. Amazon’s Video on Demand required registration and it was a fairly simple process as well. Streaming videos on both were very smooth and the HD video sample from Amazon’s Video on Demand was excellent quality. For reference my main router is located upstairs while my player was downstairs in an in-law unit.

As for sound and video quality, no complaints there. You honestly won’t hear or see any difference between this and the PS3 or any of the other brand name players unless you’re one of those people who like to scrutinize each and every detail and measurebate instead of watching a movie. DVD upscaling was decent with the few I tested. I don’t have extensive experience with good quality DVD upscalers so I can’t really comment on it, but to me it does a good job.

Other quick notes about the player – the player can be noisy (mechanical noise of the laser moving) when it initially loads up and when you skip chapters, but normal playback is fine. If you leave the player untouched at the Home menu it will eventually turn off which is great for energy saving. Overall, this is a great blu-ray player with exceptional speed and great overall video and quality performance. Extra features are plenty and oh yeah, it’s 3D-ready. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another.

brilliant TV with flaws
Let me tell you first that I personally bought UN55C8000 2 weeks ago.

The movies I tried on the TV were:
Nemo (DVD format; 2D mode)
Legion (DVD format; 2D mode)
Aliens vs Monsters (3D mode)
Avatar (Blu-Ray format; 2D and converted to 3D mode)

I changed the playing format on the TV to “Dynamic” mode before playing Avatar. I swear the colors I saw in Cinemark theatre weren’t half as good as they look on this TV. Magnificent!! Awesome!!

I also tried to watch the same movie in 3D mode. The depth of the upconverted 3D mode was only partially good as compared to the actual 3D movie you would watch with 3D glasses. This TV lose one star because of this.

Another star was lost because of the poor double-edging (crosstalk of images) of the some of the scenes in the movie (Aliens vs Monsters) when you watch it in 3D mode. People say it happens occasionally, some people said “it is rare”. Let me tell you that it happens almost all the times when the background in the picture is dark and the object is bright and glowing in it. Example: The planet in the sky before it breaks or the calendar behind the guy who is laying with a ping-pong ball or the inside view of the church. 90% of the movie is bright so we don’t see double-edging 90% of the times.

God forbids, if we get “Lord of the Rings” in 3D format someday in future, you will see double-edging (or crosstalk) 60% of the time as the movie will have quite a dark scenes in it. I spoke with Samsung and the guy advised me to install the latest upgrade to the TV, which I did but it didn’t fix the issue.

And when I have spent the maximum dollars (00) for this technology, I don’t want to compromise with the quality of it.

I also played Nemo in 2D mode and the under-the-sea dark scenes had cloudy edges around the objects in it (such as Dory or Nemo’s dad).

One more thing: I tried to play the blu-ray movie from my laptop and hooked my laptop to the TV through the Denon receiver. The movie on TV looked normal whereas on laptop it is ultra sharp and clear. And I know it is not the Denon receiver. Anyway, this did not bother me as much as crosstalk issues while watching 3D content.

TV in 3D mode loses color if you take 2 steps to the right or left. So, it asks you to remain seated in Love Seat. If you sit on a chair besides you or another sofa on the side, you won’t see half the colors. But this is expected. “Angle Viewing” is usually narrow in LCDs as compared to Plasma. However, 2D mode has larger angle view than 3D. But then, you don’t dance around when you are watching 3D movies.

Other than this, the aesthetics are awesome!!

Honestly speaking, unless Samsung provides a solution to eliminate crosstalk/double-edging completely, this TV does not deserve more than 3 stars.

So Far, So Good–No, Great!
If you’re like me, you read several reviews to get a feel for the product. My two cents are to help those like me that were on the fence for about two months and then finally decided to pull the trigger. My first thing to do is to tell you what I upgraded from- a Panasonic 55″ HDTV rear projection (no hdmi ports) with a Panasonic progressive scan dvd player. My first impressions after a week of watching satellite tv, blue-ray dvd, and 3D is–WOW! I bought this tv, the 3D blue ray player, the starter kit (included in my purchase at no charge), a wireless adapter for the tv, and two hdmi cables. Purchased everything through Amazon rather than a retail store for (a) a better price by 0 over BB, and (b) to save the sales tax of over 0 to get a new entertainment shelf/bracket unit. First thing on my mind is if you get this setup get the hdmi cables because none are included with the tv or the blue ray player. I’m also glad I got the wireless adapter because it’s much cleaner and easier to access the internet content. The 3D content is what we’re all paying for so I’ll start with that. First, I’m glad that DirecTV includes four 3D channels at no charge, and the system recognizes the tv is able to run 3D so it adds the channels when you add them to your guide. Second, I find myself using the 3D effect for regular programming to give HD shows added depth and dimension. True 3D content is thin right now, but I’m getting great enjoyment watching Lord Of The Rings (my standard dvd extended versions)in 3D with the upconverter on the tv. True 3D content pops off the screen, and upconverted television programs and non-blue ray movies get a feeling of depth and background dimension. Regular HD picture is beautiful. The blue ray picture is incredible. As far as the internet apps, I use Netflix to stream movies and Pandora for music. The Netflix picture was not impressive but I had to upgrade my internet speed to get a better quality picture (not the TV’s fault). I was worried about having these items shipped but had no problems. The tv was delivered by a local shipper and was checked for damage and was powered up before they left. Everything programmed easily (no geek squad necessary), and tweaked settings to my personal preferences over the next few days. Everything is working flawlessly thusfar. Bottom line for me is if 3D becomes the next frontier of in-home entertainment, I am ready, and if 3D doesn’t pan out, I still have an HD tv with internet apps, beautiful picture and sound, and awesome blue ray viewing, with the added benefit of giving a 3D-like look to any movie or program. My suggestion is to read up on proper setup and optimal viewing distance, it will help you have a better experience.

It’s Ok
The good: Best black levels than other edge-lit sets, accurate color, with gray-scale linear, checks and photographs of many changes, elegant style with deep skirt inches; Amazing flow and content via the widget well-integrated application platform compatible 3D, 2D to 3D conversion system works better than expected. The bad: Extremely expensive; Thinking of uniformity, and not viewing angle, light black levels than the full range of local-to fading, while the blue shades of black, does not properly handle the contents 1080p/24, 3D pictures phantom exposed edges (crosstalk) are not includes 3D glasses, terrible remote. The Bottom Line: 3D is still a work in progress and 2D image quality reaches far the best available, but the high end of the series UNC8000 Samsung offers more features wonderfully strong performances and unique style.

Copying Tips for Blu Ray Discs

Copying Tips for Blu Ray Discs

Many compact disc replication companies think that the Blue-ray disc is truly part of a new wave of technology that has taken over the entertainment and movie industries.  Technologies such as HD-DVD use the high-resolution imagery available in the Blu-ray disc and also employ the enhanced surround sound capabilities to produce state-of-the art discs that are ready for market.

Some movie makers require the special resolution features that are accomplished with the Blue-ray disc replication process; because the Blu-ray disc has more than six times the resolution that is found in the digitally produced masters that are used in DVD’s in the movie industry.  Both formats for DVD replication have been warmly greeted by moviegoers who enjoy the high-definition picture quality in the movies that they go to.

Production costs are not affected when the Blu-ray disc replication process is used in place of the standard quality DVD formats because there is a 10% price difference between Blu-ray discs and the standard DVD formats most commonly used by the entertainment industry.  Blu-ray discs are designed to last more than 15 years, and the technology that is used to produce this replication technology does not get outdated so there are no replacement costs to worry about.

The Blu-ray disc replication process produces a disc that will not scratch, and is also resistant to fingerprint trails.  To use DVD’s that have gone through the Blu-ray disc replication process, a customer does not need to worry about purchasing special cartridges to hold the hard coated disc.  The Blue-ray disc can be used in the same manner as regular DVD’s and compact discs.

During the Blue-ray replication stages, a publisher or writer might want to place content protection on the Blu-ray disc.  The Blu-ray disc offers some of the strongest methods of copy protection available today and it is suitable for use in any format.  So whether you have a compact disc, DVD, or HD-DVD medium, the mandatory copy protection mechanisms that are built-in to every Blu-ray disc replication will be back up by a strict licensing procedure.

Many people who use the Blu-ray disc replication process for the products they sell choose to use the extra storage capacity on the Blu-ray disc to add special features that customers will be surprised to see when they use it for the first time.  The extra capacity on the Blu-ray disc allows files to have room to expand, which gives a big boost to the high-definition picture quality on the DVD.
